Denise: A Tribute to Hong Kong-Resilience and Reflection

It has been some time since I created this piece, yet the emotions that fueled it remain profound. At the time, my heart ached daily as I witnessed the news unfolding in Hong Kong. I felt compelled to dedicate this doll to all the Hong Kongers bravely fighting for their freedom.

When I was working on this project, the situation had grown increasingly dire following the proposed extradition bill in May 2019. The struggles between the youth and the authorities were escalating rapidly. Although I am from Taiwan, not Hong Kong, I deeply empathized with their plight. As a Taiwanese person, I understood the weight of being oppressed and threatened on the international stage. Through this work, I hoped to urge others to take a moment to understand the freedoms that were being diminished in Hong Kong.

The doll's features were inspired by the Hong Kong singer and activist Denise Ho. At the time, she was one of the few prominent figures willing to stand firmly with the people, even bringing the movement's voice to the United Nations to seek international support.

Symbolism & Craftsmanship in Retrospect:

  • The Crimson Eye (#EyeForHK): I set a red corundum (ruby) in her right eye to honor the young woman who was blinded by a projectile during a protest—a moment that became a powerful symbol of the resistance.
  • Flowers of Reflection: The withering flower on her chest was chosen to represent the fragile state of Hong Kong at that historical moment. Conversely, the sunflower on her back paid homage to Taiwan’s 2014 Sunflower Movement, symbolizing our shared pursuit of democracy.
  • The Golden Chain of Homer: The symbols on her feet represented the elements of the Golden Chain of Homer, signifying the transition from chaos to the re-establishment of order.
  • The Umbrella & Mask: In that context, masks were both a necessity against tear gas and a powerful symbol of rebellion. The umbrella referenced the 2014 Umbrella Movement; I found a poignant irony in how a simple tool for shelter had become a defensive "weapon" against shields and batons.

This project allowed me to experiment with several techniques that have since become a part of my creative repertoire. The miniature umbrella was a significant challenge that required months of meditation and trial. I was determined to make it function like a real umbrella, not just a static prop. With guidance from my husband, I eventually succeeded in downsizing the complex mechanics. I chose lace for the canopy for two reasons: it was a signature material in my metalwork, and I wanted its perceived fragility to create a stark contrast to the incredible strength and resolve demonstrated by the protesters.

Additionally, I debuted changeable magnetic hands for this piece. Using tiny rare-earth magnets, I realized I could alter her hand gestures, allowing for more expressive storytelling.

(The Golden Chain of Homer):
